Summary
This topic covers the steps required to join copper
pipes using solder-ring fittings. Follow these steps
to find out more:
1 Cleaning the pipes
2 Applying the flux
3 Assembling the fitting
4 Heating the joint evenly
Tools
Pipe cutter, brush, blow torch
Materials
Solder ring fittings, flux
Step 1 - Cleaning the pipes
Solder ring fittings have the solder already built
in and need simply to be heated. Pipes must be clean
and free of burr before you fit them. Use a pipe cutter
to attain a clean cut.
Step 2 - Applying the flux
Apply the flux to the cleaned surface with a brush.
Also apply it to the inside of the fitting.
Step 3 - Assembling the fitting
Push all the pipes into the fitting as far as they will go.
Give the pipe a slight turn to make sure the flux is spread
evenly.
Step 4 - Heating the joint evenly
Spread the blowtorch flame evenly over the entire fitting.
Watch carefully for the moment when the bright ring of solder
appears. When this occurs, remove the heat and allow it to cool.
